Prepare the pruning of trees

In this cold and humid period, there is not much left to harvest, except a few fruits, like certain varieties of apples, or some vegetables, like leeks and some cabbage. Prune your fruit trees and perennials to maximize your chances of fruiting and flowering the following spring. However, never cut when it is freezing. Take the opportunity to carry out the necessary preventive treatments on your fruit trees.

Protect the soil

Plants sensitive to frost should be mulched, in order to maximize the heat supplied by the soil. In addition to straw, you can make mulch from bark, dried grass or dead leaves. You can also install winter sails, which have the advantage of protecting your plants from the cold while letting them breathe; even thermal sheets, more efficient. Your tubs must be brought in to prevent their roots from freezing. Place them in a ventilated place and not too heated.

Feed the birds

Winter is a difficult time for these "gardener's companions". Food is scarce, especially seeds and insects. Bring a variety of commercially available bird seeds, sunflower seeds, fruit (apple, for example) or fat (such as margarine). Make sure to leave them food regularly and always in the same place: they will be able to come and eat more easily.

Clean the weeds

Take advantage of this winter break to clean up your garden. Remove all weeds, remove twigs and other debris: this will give you healthy ground to start your spring crops. It is also an opportunity to clean your tools thoroughly: brush them with soapy water and disinfect them with alcohol at 90 °. Do the same with your pots and planters. Finally, replace your sleeves and stakes in poor condition.
